Our First Look at 'Vigil' Season 3 Heads to the Arctic

Vigil is probably one of the best thrillers that you've probably never seen. (Maybe never even heard of!) The BBC crime drama was a fairly big hit in the U.K., but has yet to really break out in America, despite its accessible anthology-esque format and buzzy stars Suranne Jones (Hostage) and Rose Leslie (The Time Traveler's Wife).

The series airs on Peacock in the U.S., but it's hard to know whether the streamer has chosen not to put that much promotion behind it, given its other priorities (hi, The Traitors franchise) or if it's simply yet to truly establish itself as a destination for Anglophile-friendly fare. (Peacock is also home to other BBC hits like The Capture and The Undeclared War.)

The first season of Vigil followed the high-stakes investigation of a murder on board a nuclear-powered British submarine submarinee. The second switched things up entirely, taking to the proverbial air with a story that revolved around drone warfare and the British Air Force in Scotland. Its third will see DCI Amy Silva (Jones) and DI Kirsten Longacre (Leslie) journey to a remote Arctic research station, where a covert member of the British special forces has been shot

Here's the series' description.

DCI Amy Silva and DI Kirsten Longacre return for a new case that takes them to a remote Arctic research station, where a member of a covert British special forces mission has been shot dead.
Amy and Kirsten will need to catch the killer and defuse a potential international confrontation, driven by a land grab for energy and resources in the changing polar climate, with both their careers and relationship on the line.

Alongside Jones and Leslie, Gary Lewis (Down Cemetery Road) is returning as DS Robertson, and Dominic Mafham (Steal) is back as Sir Ian Downing.

Season 3 will also star Benjamin Wainwright (Maigret), Jeppe Beck Laursen (The Last Kingdom), Steven Miller (Dept.Q), Naomi Yang (Under Salt Marsh), Danusia Samal (Red Eye), and Tornike Gogrichiani (Drops of God).

Other members of the ensemble cast include Jordan Duvigneau (Mood), Kaisa Hammarlund (Hijack), Adam Fidusiewicz (A Gentleman in Moscow), Eric Godon (In Bruges), Conor Berry (Karen Pirie), Amy Manson (Rebus), Jason Tobin (A Thousand Blows), Steven Cree (All of You), Killian Coyle (Shetland), Derek Riddell (Industry), Alma Prelec (Fifteen Love) Dawn Sievewright (Undertow), Artur Zai Barrera (The Old Man), and Shereen Cutkelvin (Summerwater).

Vigil Season 3 is written by series creator Tom Edge, with additional writers Tom Mair and Eve Hedderwick Turner. Gareth Bryn (The Gathering) and Faye Gilbert (The Bay) share directing duties. Edge is also an executive producer, alongside Jake Lushington for World Productions, and Gaynor Holmes and Stephanie Fyfe for the BBC. Marcus Wilson is the series producer, and George Aza-Selinger is the associate producer.

Vigil is set to premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later this year. Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Peacock in the U.S., with Season 3 almost certain to join them at a later date.
